Why standards matter more than ever
Digital identity systems are being developed around the world, often at the same time and often in very different ways.
On the surface, many of these systems appear similar. They use digital credentials, identity wallets and verification services, and they often aim to solve comparable problems. But underneath, they may rely on different data formats, different protocols and different assurance models.
That creates a basic but significant issue. Two systems can both be well designed and still fail to work together.
Standards are what close that gap. They create a shared foundation that allows systems in different countries, sectors and ecosystems to communicate, interoperate and build trust with one another.

Earlier in the series, we looked at some of the biggest barriers to cross-border digital identity: regulatory fragmentation, misaligned trust frameworks and technical incompatibility.
Standards sit at the centre of all three.
They reduce friction between jurisdictions, make mutual recognition more realistic and give providers a more consistent basis for operating internationally. Without that common foundation, every cross-border interaction risks becoming a one-off integration, with its own technical work, legal interpretation and trust assessment.
That is difficult to scale. Standards are what make interoperability repeatable rather than bespoke.

In practice, the journey is more likely to look gradual than dramatic.

What this means for organisations
For organisations that rely on digital identity in areas such as hiring, financial services or compliance, this has some practical implications.
The first is that waiting for perfect alignment is probably the wrong approach. Global standards will take time to mature, and organisations that hold back until everything is settled may find themselves reacting too late.
The second is that flexibility matters. Systems, providers and internal processes need to be able to adapt as standards evolve, regulations change and new interoperability requirements take shape.
It is also sensible to align with emerging frameworks where possible, even if the global picture is not yet complete. Adopting approaches that are already gaining traction can reduce future friction and make transitions easier later on.
Above all, organisations need to plan for gradual change rather than a finished end state. Cross-border digital identity will not arrive fully formed. It will develop step by step, and strategies need to reflect that.

Because in the end, interoperability is not just about technology or policy. It is about whether different systems are built to speak the same language.
